Peterkin Meets a Star ebook App for Kids

eBook Apps for Little Kids

Emilie Boon’s Peterkin Meets a Star is now an ebook and can be played on your iPhone or iPad.  This simple but charming story is perfect for very young ones, especially those who really  want to learn how to read.  The words light up as a mom-like voice reads the story.  Only the mom-voice is much more patient than I ever am and mom-voice is not racing against the clock to hustle the kids to bed. Loss of a Pet: Picture Book for ages 4-adult (The Tenth Good Thing…)

Picture Book for Kids on Loss of Pet

Our quest for a puppy took a funny turn. We were third on the list for a female Golden Retriever and the breeder just emailed to say that one of the three female puppies had an accident and lost her tail. That news got me thinking. Our friends who just got a Black Labrador 6-week-old puppy said to try to find a vet that has a “new puppy” package because initial costs for neutering and shots were not inexpensive. She also recommended animal health insurance through Purina which has different deductibles. Capability:Mom‘s dog (a “Doodle” mix) has an auto-immune medical condition. Read more…

Shapes with Asian American Twist: Round is a Mooncake

eBook Asian American Shape Book for Kids

Round is a Mooncake written by Roseanne Thong and illustrated by Grace Lin, is an ebook for the iPhone or iPad  about shapes with an Asian American Children’s Literature twist.  The eBook is great for new readers because the words light up as the narrator (a charming young girl’s voice) reads the story.  I have to say that I think the lighting up of words as a story is read is one of the greatest attributes of an eBook over a traditional book. eBook app for Learning Colors: Delightful for Toddlers!

Learn Colors with Delightful eBook App for Toddlers

Once upon an App has these two cute iPhone or iPad applications for learning colors called Fruits and Veggies. As you can see by the images, the artwork is charming and old fashioned. It appealed to my “all boy” 5-year-old who delighted in matching the colors during a Chinese Culture performance that did not hold his interest. We just turned down the volume on my iPhone and it kept him occupied for the last half hour of the show and I was, frankly, surprised that this held his attention because we haven’t worked on colors for years. Peter Rabbit eBook App combines Classic with Puzzle

Peter Rabbit eBook App and Game for Kids

Once Upon an App has made the classic story Peter Rabbit into an eBook for the iPhone or iPad.  This is a delightful iPhone ebook.  The interactive puzzle is a la the classic “Highlights” magazine of spotting the hidden picture in the illustrated line drawing page.  When you find the picture, you move an easter egg to locate it and the picture turns into a beautiful colored illustration.  The story is narrated on each page while you search for the hidden picture. Fun Word Problem Picture Book for ages 6-10 (You Can, Toucan, Math)

Picture Book With Math Concepts

This is a fun word problem book featuring birds with problems in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This would be a fun book to use for the summer to sneak in a little math but in a really fun way. The sweet spot is 2nd to 3rd graders, but even my preschooler will enjoy this book if we do the problems together by drawing out rows of birds to solve multiplication and division which would be new for him.

If you are looking for more picture books that teach math concepts, I have a post on Picture Books that Teach Math Concepts with more suggestions.

Japanese American Post Internment Story: Journey Home (ages 8-12)

Multicultural Books for Kids on Japanese American Internment

Journey Home by Yoshiko Uchida is an important Japanese American story about what happened after the Japanese Americans were released from internment camp. This is Yoshiko Uchida’s own family story. This is the sequel to Journey to Topaz, in which eleven-year-old Yuki and her family are forced to relocate to a dusty internment camp in a remote part of Utah. While there are many stories about the Japanese American internment experience, and I list more on Top 10: Japanese American Children’s Books, Journey Home is the only book I’ve come across that tells the next piece of the story.
