Math Facts Games for Kids

Math Games That Are Really Fun

Mid-year progress reports came out at my elementary school and all of a sudden, we realized that our kids need extra practice with math facts! Several of my Mom Friends emailed me so I thought I would share our plan of attack. The first thing to do is not to panic. Math facts are like practicing a sport or learning an instrument. Slow and steady wins the race. And, just like for your child’s sports or instrument, you don’t want to burn them it. THIS MUST BE FUN!

Trade-First Subtraction App to Learn Carry Subtraction!

Carry Subtraction App Teaches Like a Tutor

I don’t personally know Esa Helttula, the creator of  Trade-First Subtraction and other great educational iPhone and iPad math apps, but I could kiss him!  He really gets what kids need help with in elementary school math.  The tricky things.  The things you must slow down and think about.  He must have been or currently is a teacher of some sort.  Clearly a kick-ass one!  I wish I had him teaching my kids math! Favorite Christmas Picture Books

I was combing the bookshelves to clean them out and ran across our little pile of Christmas books that I’ve save through the years.  I read them last night to my youngest but my oldest, now 11, saw the pile and took her favorite, Auntie Claus, to read even though she was supposed to be studying for a test.  She returned it  10 minutes later with the pronouncement, “That is a good book.”  This is a particularly good book for responsible older sisters, particularly the self-sacrificing type,  which might explain why she loved it.  It will always be on our shelves at Christmas for her because that is the power and magic of picture books: You Never Out Grown Them! Best Apps with Science Concepts for Kids

I am starting to buy into this idea of teaching and really connecting material through games and apps. I was sort of on board with this concept, but since playing around with The Elements (a Harry Potter version of the Periodic Table) that my brother-in-law turned me on to, I am now a believer as I saw, with my own eyes, how captivated my kids were with the Periodic Table, an otherwise dull chart. Since my recollection of Organic Chemistry is quite scant, I really appreciate how I don’t actually have to do much except show my kids where the content is located to get them to read up on the elements. Apps for Autistic Children

Best Apps for Autistic Kids

Thank you to Dad developer Kyle Tomson of Mobile Education Store, for letting me repost his great article on apps for high functioning autistic children.  They  benefit greatly from the language aspects of these apps.  Kyle has a daughter, Caitlin, who is very high functioning on the autism spectrum so this topic is very near and dear to his heart, so much so that he went and developed them himself!
