I don’t personally know Esa Helttula, the creator of Trade-First Subtraction and other great educational iPhone and iPad math apps, but I could kiss him! He really gets what kids need help with in elementary school math. The tricky things. The things you must slow down and think about. He must have been or currently is a teacher of some sort. Clearly a kick-ass one! I wish I had him teaching my kids math! Read more…
I was combing the bookshelves to clean them out and ran across our little pile of Christmas books that I’ve save through the years. I read them last night to my youngest but my oldest, now 11, saw the pile and took her favorite, Auntie Claus, to read even though she was supposed to be studying for a test. She returned it 10 minutes later with the pronouncement, “That is a good book.” This is a particularly good book for responsible older sisters, particularly the self-sacrificing type, which might explain why she loved it. It will always be on our shelves at Christmas for her because that is the power and magic of picture books: You Never Out Grown Them! Read more…
My brother-in-law is trying to get his kids to learn keyboarding skills. After surveying what is out there on the market, he picked Typing Instructor Platinum and had this to say after purchasing it and having his two kids try it out: Read more…
I am starting to buy into this idea of teaching and really connecting material through games and apps. I was sort of on board with this concept, but since playing around with The Elements (a Harry Potter version of the Periodic Table) that my brother-in-law turned me on to, I am now a believer as I saw, with my own eyes, how captivated my kids were with the Periodic Table, an otherwise dull chart. Since my recollection of Organic Chemistry is quite scant, I really appreciate how I don’t actually have to do much except show my kids where the content is located to get them to read up on the elements. Thank you to Dad developer Kyle Tomson of Mobile Education Store, for letting me repost his great article on apps for high functioning autistic children. They benefit greatly from the language aspects of these apps. Kyle has a daughter, Caitlin, who is very high functioning on the autism spectrum so this topic is very near and dear to his heart, so much so that he went and developed them himself! Read more…
I didn’t have an iPad when my kids were in preschool so we completely missed this phase. My youngest had access to my iPhone and he played with the Grinch camera and made us and all his preschool friends into Grinch-like creatures after snapping their photo with my phone. Had I known that it was a precious moment in time, never to be duplicated, I would have saved those faces and emailed them to their moms if I were totally together. Read more…
Can you spot the toad? Ok, it wasn’t that hard. This toad hopped across my path the other day at the off leash dog park. It was the largest toad I’ve seen around here, almost the size of my fist. I happened to have my iPhone with me so I took a picture very quietly. Luckily, my dog didn’t spot it. I thought the toad has pretty good camouflage! What do you think? Can your child spot it?
