The Challenges of Naming Your Dog

The Challenges of Naming Your Dog

Thank you IAMS for sponsoring this post. Watch ‘Duck’ by IAMS and celebrate the meaningful connection between you and your pet.

My husband and I promised our kids that they could get a dog when our youngest turned five. It was our way to stall until all three could take some responsibility. We tried for one year to adopt a puppy from a shelter. We visited Angell Memorial three times but there were very few puppies and most were for adults only. We went to Buddy Dog but the employee there was quite firm that a Jack Russell terrier mix puppy was too high energy for a family with three small kids. Thank goodness; she was right!

We dog sat too, to practice. The first dog we sat shed mightily and could not tolerate high-pitched noises. That breed was out; we had two kids learning to play the flute. The second dog we sat I worried was too large for our small house. We fell in love with him despite his size and did the next best thing to keeping him; we bought his relative from the same breeder.

Does your pet stink sometimes? Mine does. Right now in fact! He’s badly in need of a bath but we’ve been on vacation for the past week week and my dog has been with his favorite dog sitter stinking it up.

Petz Beach 3DS game

Petz Beach 3DS Game for Kids Who Want a Pet!

My son, now age 10, is the serious gamer. He goes from screen to screen if we are not careful: iPad, computer, TV, Wii, and 3DS. But lately, the 3DS is rarely used; he’s waiting for the newest Pokémon games to come out, so his device is untended and uncharged.

I had purchased other Petz games in the past for his older sisters when they were younger. PickyKidPix (now 12) and Grasshopper and Sensei (now 14) both have DSi that they don’t use at all. When Petz Beach arrived, I was surprised by how my kids pounced on it. Petz Beach 3DS game Read more…

Difficult To Shop For Gifts: Day 4 of 12 Days of Shopping

Today, Jeanette and I are focusing Day 4  on Difficult to Shop for Gifts including your spoiled pet and those who have everything yet you must procure a gift during the holiday season. This includes husbands, wives, father-in-laws and mother-in-laws.

This is a tough category for me. I’ve started using The Gift Huntress for help because I’m running out of ideas for my difficult-to-shop-for list but I hope my old ideas will work for you!

My husband would also like a 1970 Porche 911 like Jeanette’s or a $5000 watch, but then he just recently sent me this video of a car that flies that he fell in love with. So that’s on the list too. The FANTASY list that is!

How about you? What is your best idea for difficult to shop for people? Please share!!!

Keeping Pets Safe with HayTag: GIVEAWAY

HayTag: A Long Range Wireless Pet ID System using Your Smart Phone

We were at our usual dog park which spans the perimeter of a water reservoir — fenced in with only one small side exposed to the street — when we saw a frantic dog racing up and down a quater mile stretch of the hike in search of his owner. Luckily, the dog and owner were reunited by the time we finished our walk. Read more…

More Things That Kill Dogs If They Eat It

Common Pet Poisons to Beware of

My dog chewed on an industrial mouse poison bait trap. I have no idea where he got it but I found it in our gated and locked back yard. He was scheduled for his annual vet visit anyway, so it was well times. I should have brought the mouse poison along with the stool sample so I had to call my husband to read me the information off the box. Read more…

Books for Kids Grieving for Pet

It is never easy when a pet dies whether it’s expected or unexpected, particularly for children. My Mom Friend at Yoga asked for picture book recommendations when her son’s hamster died. She knew this would be hard on her son and my other Mom Friend recommended they read the Rainbow book out loud during the burial in the backyard.

Luckily the ground wasn’t frozen over because the weather was still quite cold. The Mom reported back that the burial went well and that reading the book helped make the ceremony special and personal. I think they referred to The Legend of the Rainbow Bridge but there actually two picture books on the same topic with  very similar names. Read more…

Top 10: Best Dogs in Children’s Books

Best Dog Story Books for Kids

I’m a new dog owner and this is my first dog because you can’t count the beagle that we had when I was 2-years-old. Someone — maybe the meter reader? — left the gate open and he got run over and after that we just had a steady stream of Siamese cats. But now I get why dog people can be so over-the-top with their dogs. Dogs try to win your heart much more so than a cat, and these dogs in children’s chapter books have won untold hearts the world over.  Even if you are not a dog person, these dogs will convert you! These dogs are either rescuing someone or being rescued, getting kidnapped or preventing robberies, or just  a dog-about-town. Please meet some dogs to fall in love with! Things Dogs Eat That Will Kill Them: Raisins, onions, etc…

Food That Can Kill Dogs

We got the most adorable puppy two months ago.  He’s a Golden Retriever and he is a sweet bundle of love.  We had endless family meetings to pick a name and the only one that everyone agreed upon was Wally, so he’s named after the Red Sox mascot. Read more…
