My 5th grade son and his two buddies are inordinately fond of video gaming. My son can be on two screens simultaneously; playing a game while watching a YouTuber play a different game. That drives me nuts.
We, the moms, took action. We got them programming in Scratch and Java, put them in computer camp to learn Java through Minecraft, and set up a boys book club.
We also like to keep them active. We enrolled them in boxing, fencing, outdoor sports games, and tennis classes together. They played on the same town soccer team too.
Today, after their group tennis lesson, I plotted to keep them outdoors. I asked them if they wanted to help me with my garden and they were game. Miracle-Gro Gro-Ables pods make planting a vegetable and herb garden easy, and I had 18 pods that needed to go into the ground.
What’s great about the Miracle-Gro Gro-Ables pods is that everything you need to grow a fruit, herb, or vegetable can be found in the seed pod. You simply plant the pot, water daily, and watch the seed pod sprout. We’ve been getting so much rain lately that we can let Mother Nature take care of our pods.
There is no failure either; each Gro-able is guaranteed to grow! In 1-2 weeks the seeds will sprout. Several months after planting, flowers will appear which means fruit is close at hand.
Each individual kit will come with 30 Gro-able pods in one variety. You can choose their variety from a list of 4-6 types. We are especially fond of cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, parsley, dill and bell peppers.
Gro-ables is a fun activity for kids and families that get kids outside and interacting with nature and food.
And once they are outside, they found other ways to occupy themselves!
There’s a lot to learn from even the smallest plants.

p.s. I’ve collected Pins of gardens that inspire me. I hope they inspire you too!

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
Kids really are good at entertaining themselves once we manage to get them outdoors! Those little seed pods look great.
Hi MaryAnne,
Yes! That’s the challenge … just getting them outside. Then they find that it’s so much fun! And then the next time, they are a little more enthusiastic to pick up where they left off.
