The Kid Lit Blog Hop is now monthly! To celebrate the holidays in December, I’ve picked out five new picture books to share and I’m giving them away to five different winners.
The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg
Can you believe that it’s been thirty years since The Polar Express was published?! This story about the faith that children bring into the world is a classic that reminds young and old alike about the true magic of Christmas. Do you want to spread the magic? Every time you use hashtag #ReadandBelieve, a copy of The Polar Express will be donated to Christmas in the City, a Boston-based non-profit helping families in need. [picture book, ages 4 and up]
Over the River & Through the Wood: A Holiday Adventure by Linda Ashman, illustrated by Kim Smith
It used to be so easy to get to the grandparents’ house back in the day. It was just over the river and through the woods in a sleigh pulled by a single horse. These days, it’s a bit more complicated. The grandparents live much farther away, requiring trains, planes and automobiles — and more — to get there. Luckily, there is also a one horse sleigh to the rescue when other modes of transportation break down. [picture book, ages 4 and up]
The Red Apple by Feridun Oral
On a cold winter’s day, Rabbit leaves his burrow in search of food. He finds a single apple hanging off a tree but it’s much too high for him to reach. He gets his friends involved — mouse, fox, and bear — and together they manage a way to get it down. They split the perfect apple into fourths and, now satisfied, snuggle up inside bear’s cave for a well deserved rest. Working together pays off! [picture book, ages 4 and up]
Goodnight, Manger by Laura Sassi, illustrated by Jane Chapman
It’s bedtime for baby Jesus but no one is getting any sleep tonight! With animals braying and visitors arriving, it’s just too noisy for baby to sleep! [picture book, ages 4 and up]
Dear Santa, Love, Rachel Rosenstein by Amanda Peet and Andrea Troyer, illustrated by Christine Danivier
Rachel loves everything about Christmas from the twinkly lights, to the Christmas tree, to the beautifully wrapped presents … but she’s Jewish so she doesn’t celebrate Christmas.
“How about a tree? Emily Berenbaum’s family has a tree and they’re Jewish.”
“You can’t sit on two horse with one behind,” said Papa Murray.
“I can,” said her mom. “Especially after that meal.
Rachel tries to get Santa to visit but she’s very sad that it doesn’t work out. When her family goes to their usual Chinese restaurant on Christmas, she’s surprised to find other classmates there who don’t celebrate Christmas either. Lucy Deng will celibate Chinese New Year in a few weeks. Mike Rashid and Amina Singh celebrate Diwali. And Rachel, of course, has Hanukkah, the festival of lights. [picture book, ages 4 and up]
