When big sister Sadie notices Eva’s hair is just too long and getting out of control, she decides to take matters into her own hands. When the haircut is over and there’s a pile of hair on the floor, Sadie realizes she may have done something wrong. What will Eva and Sadie’s parents say? Will they be able to fix the worst haircut ever?

The Thickety: A Path Begins is a spellbinding tale about a girl, the Thickety, and the power of magic. Fans of Neil Gaiman will love this thrilling new world.
When Kara Westfall was five years old, her mother was convicted of the worst of all crimes: witchcraft. Years later, Kara and her little brother, Taff, are still shunned by the people of their village, who believe that nothing is more evil than magic…except, perhaps, the mysterious forest that covers nearly the entire island. It has many names, this place. Sometimes it is called the Dark Wood, or Sordyr’s Realm. But mostly it’s called the Thickety.
The villagers live in fear of the Thickety and the terrible creatures that live there. But when an unusual bird lures Kara into the forbidden forest, she discovers a strange book with unspeakable powers. A book that might have belonged to her mother.
And that is just the beginning of the story.

Everyone knows Alice slept with two guys at one party. When Healy High star quarterback, Brandon Fitzsimmons, dies in a car crash, it was because he was sexting with Alice. Ask anybody.
Rumor has it Alice Franklin is a slut. It’s written all over the “slut stall” in the girls’ bathroom: “Alice had sex in exchange for math test answers” and “Alice got an abortion last semester.” After Brandon dies, the rumors start to spiral out of control. In this remarkable debut novel, four Healy High students tell all they “know” about Alice–and in doing so reveal their own secrets and motivations, painting a raw look at the realities of teen life. But in this novel from Jennifer Mathieu, exactly what is the truth about Alice? In the end there’s only one person to ask: Alice herself.

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
I loved reading the winners! The haircut book looks hilarious!
Thanks. Stopping by via the KLBH
Hi Brittany,
I want to read that one too!!!
I have such a problem with choosing books by the cover. I want to read Thickety because it looks cute, and I want Sparky because how could you not want it.
Hi Jeanette,
I am a “judge the book by the cover” kind of person too. I love how kids get to award books with their stamp of approval. These make the best referrals for my kids who view adult suggestions with some suspicion.
Mia, I love all of these book collections that you put together…such a great reference! Visiting from the Aloha blog hop!
Hi Jennifer,
Thanks so much! Mahalo!!
The target audience chooses the winners, what a concept 😉
Hi Ann,
I know, right? Maybe kids and teens should be choosing more book awards for books targeted to them!
Some great books to keep an eye out for. Thanks for linking to the #weekendbookclub
Thanks Training Mummy! Let me know if your kids like any of them!
