I participated in an influencers Activation Program on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for mike’s hard lemonade. I received a Circle K gift card to facilitate this review and a promotional item to thank me for participating.
Do you have a signature cocktail or drink when you drink socially at a bar or a party? I don’t. I’m not much of a drinker but I will occasionally have a glass of wine when out socially. I tend towards light and fruity too. I’ve always wanted to have a Go To drink when ordering at a bar though, so I thought I’d branch out from my usual glass of wine or sangria or my non-alcoholic version of cranberry juice with a lime wedge.
I was curious to try the mike’s hard lemonade products. They had a limited edition mike’s hard pink lemonade for the summer in which the company donated more than $1 million to the Breast Cancer Research Fund. Company President Phil O’Neil says that the company was inspired by the loss of an employee named Jacqueline who died after a long battle with breast cancer.
Their philanthropy was not without controversy though. There is a connection between even moderate drinking and breast cancer according to the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute, and breast cancer survivors protested these kind of marketing tactics.
But, I think they overreacted.
Moderate drinking is defined as having one to two drinks (or more) per day:
Overall, having one to two drinks (or more) per day appears to increase the risk of breast cancer compared to not drinking. From Susan G. Koman
My mother is a breast cancer survivor and she rarely drank. Her “moderate drinking” amount would be roughly one or two drinks a year. My personal “moderate drinking” is probably two to four drinks a month. So, I’m ok with a company that sells alcohol also donating to find a cure for cancer. I mean, we need all the help we can get!
But, I missed the window to purchase mike’s hard pink lemonade, so I opted for their mike’s hard cranberry lemonade instead. I drink a lot of cranberry juice drinks because I’ve found that it helps prevent urinary tract infections.
Researchers now believe that cranberries contain substances that prevent infection-causing bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract walls. There are a couple of different theories about how exactly cranberries do this. Some studies show that certain antioxidants in cranberries change the bacteria so that they can’t stick to the urinary tract. Another idea is that cranberries create a Teflon-like slippery coating on the urinary tract walls that prevents E. coli from getting a good grip. From WebMD
I’m not sure if the percentage of cranberries in mike’s hard cranberry lemonade is high enough to help in preventing urinary tract infections but I thought the drink was light and fruity. It just might be my new go to drink! My husband likes it too!
How about you? Have you tried any of the mike’s hard lemonade products? What do you think of their company donating to the Breast Cancer Research Fund? Please chime in!
BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
I think you are right, any help is good help. My sister did a bunch of research since her breast cancer diagnosis and a lot of things can increase your risk like using aerosol sunscreen and probably sunscreen in general since low vitamin D is also linked. I guess any help is good, within reason. I haven’t tried the cranberry drink, sounds good.
Hi Ann,
It does seem like for everything you do to prevent something from happening, something negative is an outcome. Like a law of physics! But I don’t think that many people I know drink 2 drinks a night which is considered moderate which appears to be connected to causing cancer (among a million other things). I guess moderation in all things including marketing!!
I don’t drink alcohol at all, but I don’t have any problem with their donating some proceeds to cancer research.
My signature drink is probably water. Is that allowed?
Hi MaryAnne,
YES! Such a healthy drink!
