I’m so excited for this giveaway from the nice folks from Tuttle Publishing! They sent me a party box centered around Mei-Mei’s Lucky Birthday Noodles to giveaway to YOU!
Lately, my kids enjoy Dim Sum but balk at Cantonese-style Chinese Seafood which is what my husband and I love most. But Chinese noodle dishes are one constant that they have eaten and loved since they were little. Some years, the noodle preference changes: wide rice noodles versus yellow curly wheat noodles. And sometimes, the green vegetables get picked out and cast aside. Still, it’s good to know that they are increasing their good luck as they fill their bellies!
What would you use this party package for? Is it for your child’s birthday? Are you saving it for Chinese New Year? How about the Moon Festival? Whatever the occasion, I have a Birthday-in-a-Box to giveaway!!
The package includes:
- A signed copy of Mei-Mei’s Lucky Birthday Noodles by by Shan-Shan Chen and Heidi Goodman
- An engraved set of chopsticks for the birthday girl and regular wood chopsticks for the birthday guests
- Birthday streamers and balloons
- Chinese lanterns
- 2 packages of Chinese noodles
- Chinese-type necklaces for the birthday girl to give to her guests
- 10 invitations designed by the book illustrator
Mei-Mei’s Lucky Birthday Noodles: A Loving Story of Adoption, Chinese Culture and a Special Birthday Treat by Shan-Shan Chen, illustrated by Heidi Goodman
While Mei-Mei is adopted, it’s not necessarily noticeable in the picture book as you read it. Instead, you notice how loving Mei-Mei’s family is as they go about their day preparing a special meal to celebrate her birthday. Noodles ARE special in Asian culture. They signify a long life and Mei-Mei is an active participant in preparing this special meal! [picture book, ages 4 and up]
Why is Mei-Mei celebrating with lucky noodles?
Let’s learn a little Chinese!
Mei-Mei means younger sister. Family is so important in Chinese culture that there are special words for sister and brother to indicate if you are younger or older.
Mei-Mei is pronounced like the month of May: May May. Yes, it’s that easy!
Here’s the character. It’s a little trickier to write. Start by writing left to write and from the top down as if drawing a picture.
Want to make Mei-Mei’s lucky noodles?
Here’s the recipe that Mei-Mei is using! You can read the book and follow along as she makes it or just try it yourself!

My brother loved Chinese noodles so much he used to order Chicken Noodle Soup for dessert!
I would use this party pack for my granddaughter’s birthday.

I forgot to what what I’d celebrate – how about a great summer day? Or the first day of Middle School? 🙂
Hi Erik,
Yes! What a nice idea to celebrate a great summer day. My husband and I joke that we get 7 nice weather days a year here in Boston though this summer has been especially great for weather!
Hi Erik,
It’s written to appeal to adopted Chinese girls but I think everyone will enjoy it!
Looks like a very nice book! I would use it for my daughter’s birthday which is coming up in about a month. My daughter would love it and both my kids live on noodles!

Our whole family celebrates birthdays in either January or July, so those are now a long way off. Luckily, National Noodle Day is coming up 6 October… so we could use Mei Mei’s kit to celebrate that! 😉
Hi Rebecca,
Wow, I didn’t realize there was a National Noodle Day!!! That would be fun to celebrate! I think everyone loves noodles! I know we do.
