My son’s elementary school spent the whole year fundraising in order to build a new playground because the old one was nearing the end of its life.
The new playground is wonderful and just opened this past week. PickyPidPix, now in middle school, came to the playround opening with her friend right after soccer practice.
The new Moöbius climbing wall caught her eye.
She’s part monkey, so she scrambled right up.
It’s a little tricky at the top.
And this is the part where she falls …
She climbed up twice and each time she fell at the exact same spot. She proclaimed, “This playground is so dangerous. I don’t know how the little kids will be able to climb this.”
Of course, the little kids won’t be wearing cleats. I don’t think cleats are the recommended footwear for a climbing wall!
And … the playground has this amazing spongy surface. In fact, it’s the first inclusive playground in the Newton school district. Not only is it wheelchair (and stroller) accessible, but it’s very safe if kids fall.
PickyKidPix said that she wasn’t hurt at all because of the spongy surface. But in case she ever gets scrapes and cuts from her active play, I’m keeping a few items from the Healthy Essentials kit I received from Johnson & Johnson handy.
Neosporin and Band-Aids are a happy pairing. I’ll keep those in my purse. I love the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer sunblock. Most sunscreens make me break out, but this one doesn’t. I’d share it with my kids but they hate sunscreen so the spray suncreen from Neutrogena will be my go to.
I’m not sure if you noticed the waterproof mascara on the lower right? PickyKidPix torn into it the minute it arrived. She’s really into makeup these days but thankfully, not sporting any at school or on the soccer field.
Soccer cleats and mascara?! Oh no! I like the pairing of soccer cleats, Neosporin and Band-Aids much better!

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
With my boys, it is often neosporin and bandaids, then hope it isn’t a trip to the emergency room:) Good stuff!
Hi Jim,
I’m with you! I try to avoid the pediatrician and ER as much as possible. My secret curealls are ice, bandaids, neosporin and a kiss.
That playground looks incredible! I may have to take my kids to visit it while we are in Massachusetts! Is school out for you yet?
Hi MaryAnne,
We finished school June 20th. If you are in Newton, please come check it out. It’s at 170 Temple Street in West Newton, MA. Note that there are 3 (three!) Peirce Elementary schools in neighboring towns (Arlington and Brookline). Don’t go there by accident. Our pizza for the playground opening party that was being sold accidentally ended up at the wrong school!!
The playground is at the corner of Temple Street and Berkeley Street.
