Now that it’s spring and we can finally get outside here in Boston, it’s a great time to explore. My kids have this aversion to insects — I’m not sure why, but they are terrified by spiders in particular — so some outside insect exploration would be a good thing. I like to use books to both entertain and to teach and I wanted to introduce this wonderful program where you can get a FREE Scholastic book with a purchase of EVEREADY® Gold® batteries.
The book options include Fly Guy, The Magic School Bus and Clifford the Big Red Dog. Let’s explore how to use these books for some outside fun (and insect aversion therapy for my kids!).
I love how Emily Elizabeth and her big red dog Clifford are always up for an adventure. I guess it helps to have a dog as big as a house to feel adventurous but that seems to ensure that they are always exploring outside.
Clifford Sees America is a fun way to learn U.S. geography for kids four years and older. It’s an easy reader too, so you can read it to your preschooler or have your elementary school child read it to younger siblings.
Fly Guy vs. the Flyswatter! can do double duty for me. Not only is Fly Guy a character to love, but he can help my middle child, PickyKidPix, get over her other fear of flies.
I have always loved The Magic School Bus series and what better way to explore the outdoors using The Magic School Takes a Moonwalk?
And then, of course, there is your own backyard or even your school playground! Our neighbor Otis found a Praying Mantis on his head one day after school! He’s an insect and critter magnet.
Otis in 5th grade with a Praying Mantis on his head. It just landed there one day after school!
A few years ago, he caught toads in the creek behind our street and held a Toad and Lemonade Stand, 50 cents each. It was a hot day so my kids ended up with three glasses of lemonade and three toads. We let them free after a few days and soon had a yard full of baby toads!
A Toad and Lemonade Stand across the street yielded us these new family pets!
And you know what toads are great for? Eating insects! My kids found out after realizing they needed to catch insects to keep them fed.

What a great promotion. Love the books they are giving away!
Hi MaryAnne,
I am excited about the Scholastic and EVEREADY GOLD giveaway!! What a great partnership!
This is so cool! Great partnership, great books, and the best part about this is that I am reading this inside a Target (don’t ask), and I forgot to put batteries on my list, so I will run over and get some Eveready Gold now. Thanks for the reminder! Oh, and I also totally want to sell toads with lemonade next time we set up a stand.
Hi Jeanette,
The Toad/Lemonade Stand was a big hit, I have to say! Thanks for supporting this great partnership of books and batteries!!
Thanks! We love Magic School Bus, and we don’t have that one. I’ll have to keep an eye out for batteries. My kids just replaced the ones in their walkie talkies, so I know we could use some more AAAs on hand.
Hi Shecki,
I wanted to mention that it can be any size Everready battery too; not just AAA!
I’d love to get Clifford books. It brings back memories from when I was growing up. I just signed up to get these free books monthly for my son. I’m really excited about it. Thanks so much for sharing this with us at Countdown in Style!
Hi Brittnei,
You can get just the one Cifford book featured as part of the Everready program but the other two books are available too! Just for buying batteries which we probably all use and need anyway!
OOOH! I love free books and I definitely need batteries. My son loves the Magic School Bus, the harder the book the more he likes it and wants to read it. It amazes me that through a cartoon drawing, he can learn so much and be so much more intrigued than with another type of book. Thanks for sharing with Countdown in Style
Hi April,
Sounds like the Magic School Bus and Eveready is a great pairing for you and your son!! I do love graphic novels for all kids for that same reason! They get kids reading and they do teach a lot through inferencing.
What a wonderful program, thank you for sharing via Mommy Monday.
XO
Thanks so much Mrs.AOK,
I am also excited about getting free books for something that I always need!
