K’NEX toys have worked wonderfully to keep my son off screens, if only for a short time. I found this in the living room, after hearing my son and his middle sister, PickyKidPix, playing together for a few hours. They don’t get along that well, so this K’NEX roller coaster is a miracle of collaborative play! This is what they built:
Usually, the first round of play with a building toy like K’NEX involves following the instructions to the letter in order to duplicate the photograph. After that, anything goes.
I’m not sure why my son chose the busiest corner of the kitchen — between the sink, the dishwasher and the stove to set up camp, but I’m just happy that he’s off screens!
I asked him to pose with his finished piece and so he did. This is what it is like to raise a boy. A lot of potty humor!
Even though my son played with the K’NEX roller coaster sets quite happily, he insisted that the giveaway be the Angry Birds Space set. He was a big fan of Angry Birds a few years ago until he finished all the levels on most of the apps. The marriage of apps and K’NEX is a good one!

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
My grandkids are still small so they like the basic lego building block sets and toys that accompany them.
Hi Barbara,
Those lego sets are wonderful!
This is an AWESOME give away! K’nex are great! I like your son’s pose! 😉
Thanks Erik,
He can be such a brat!
Looks great! My daughter would love these! 🙂 Her favorite building toy(s) are actually cardboard boxes – she designs rooms with them, blankets, and Legos.
Hi Cool Mom,
I love that your daughter uses cardboard boxes to build! It is the best toy ever — so versatile and you can write, color or paint on it as well!
You know what is funny? I shared this with my daughter after I commented and she says, “Mom, aren’t these K’nex?” and pulls out a bin of them. Oh, YEAH, that’s right! Thank you, Lancaster Science Factory for allowing us to buy them by the weight! I TOTALLY forgot we had some – they ARE fun to use. And you are right, the best part of cardboard boxes is the painting and decorating! Have a wonderful weekend.
Hi Cool Mom,
That is a great idea to buy them by the weight!!! Do you kids still use them? That’s so fun you have a big supply of K’NEX at a great price! We used to buy recycleable plastic or cardboard pieces from The Children’s Museum by the weight. Another man’s trash is our treasure!!
🙂 She only purchased one small group of them. It is enough to make a car and some other misc. modern art. She uses them once in a blue moon now but they made the downsizing cut and let me tell you – not many things made that cut!
Hi Cool Mom,
That is high praise indeed!!!
I am all over this giveaway! Thanks so much for the chance to win. My son has another Angry Birds K-Nex set, but he loves lego and Tinkertoys. But honestly, he’ll use anything to build things with like rubber bands, popsicle sticks, dominos, jenga blocks… oh and duct tape! lol
Hi Renee,
Angry Birds and building toys is such a wonderful pairing!!! Sounds like your son is a real inventor! Thanks for entering!
What a fantastic giveaway. Yeah, my kids use the busiest area in the house to set up camp as well. Actually, that area is where I am – so I guess they love to be underfoot. However, I know what you mean with anything that keeps them off screen.
Great job your son did with his building.
And, oh, I do love the pose. Very original.
Also love the wood floors in the kitchen. A definitely dream of mine.
Have a great day and thank you for the lovely post and giveaway!
Thanks so much Lisa,
Yes, kids and dogs do seem to find the busiest area to set up shop or, in my dog’s case, naptime. Thanks so much for entering!
Oh, I always jump the gun and have to end up leaving two blog posts. Sorry bout that. My kids like anything that stacks.
Hi Lisa,
My kids too!!! They loved those plastic stacking cups when they were todders and any kind of game with stacking still appeals to them!
My kids have Lego’s an Mega Blocks that they love! They also love Nesting Blocks!
Hi Cassandra,
Nesting Blocks sound fun! My kids had a Mega Blocks set in a plastic tote that they liked and would carry around. Thanks so much for entering!
I used to love Tinker Toys as a kid!
Hi Larissa,
Me too!! I finally got a set for my kids but they are different now; plastic instead of wooden. I loved the wooden feel of the pegs fitting into the other pieces. I think they also sell a wooden retro set though.
We have one of the other K’NEX Angry Birds sets that my son LOVES – and we picked up our firest (secondhand) set of traditional K’Nex this past weekend – love at first sight for Johnny!
Legos and play dough are the other really popular toys in our house – plus dolls.
Hi MaryAnne,
Johnny has so many talents! I’m glad he likes K’NEX too! Play dough was popular for us, especially the homemade kind warm from the pot! Only my son really got into legos though.
My kids love stacking wooden blocks, legos, and mega blocks!
Hi Cassandra,
Your kids like the same building toys as my kids!!! Hope they like K’NEX too! Thanks so much for coming by!
Nice pose : )
My son is really hoping we win this!
My son really loves his Legos. Both my kids really love this marble runner building set we have.
Thanks Ann!
Boys will be boys!
Legos are always a winner.
Hi Leslie,
Totally agree! Thanks for entering!
My kids love playing with Legos and Lincoln Logs.. They have such an imagination when building things with them to. Thanks for the giveaway.
Hi Jodie,
Legos and Lincoln Logs are popular for my kids too! Thanks so much for entering and stopping by!
Well, 2 of 3 are still pretty young, so we have a lot of duplos, but we’re moving into an older genre now that the Big One is about to be 7.
Hi Dawn,
Duplos are great! My kids loved them too in preschool! Thanks so much for entering!
My daughter LOVES KNEX – but she also started playing w the Mega Bloks HALO collection sets.
Hi Andie,
I’m so glad girls are playing with K’NEX too! I think that is great! Thank you so much for stopping by!!
My daughter always loved K’Nex – her favorite toy. Now she’s studying Aerospace Engineering in college, and is just finishing up a semester’s internship in the structural engineering department at NASA.
Hi Shelf-Employed,
Thanks so much for stopping by! I love that your daughter’s interest in K’NEX indicated her aptitude for STEM! Congrats on her NASA internship! That sounds really exciting!! And kudos to you as the mom because I’m sure you and your husband played a role in her success as well!!
My son really loves the original angry birds sets he has like 7 of them.
And for my youngest he has just the wooden blocks he loves to build things with. 🙂
Hi Carissa,
Wow, I didn’t know there were so many Angry Bird K’NEX sets! I hope he wins! Thanks so much for entering!
Thank you so much for this terrific giveaway Mia! My 7 year old son will be so thrilled. Best, Renee xx
Hi Renee,
