International Book Giving Day, Valentine's Day and Book Giving Day

International Book Giving Day

Give a Book for International Book Giving Day

Did you know that today is both Valentine’s Day AND International Book Giving Day? It’s easy to celebrate both since both holidays are about giving! And if you really want to go crazy, February is both Heart Smart Month AND Black History Month. There’s a lot to celebrate in such a short month!

International Book Giving Day

International Book Giving Day is a 100% volunteer initiative aimed at increasing children’s access to and enthusiasm for books. We are inviting individuals to 1) give a book to a friend or family member, 2) leave a book in a waiting room for children to read, or 3) donate a gently used book to a local library, hospital or shelter or to an organization that distributes used books to children in need. You are also welcome to organize a book drive, fundraiser, volunteer event, book swap, story time session, etc. See bookgivingday.com!

To participate in International Book Giving Day, I spent the last few weeks cleaning out my bookshelves. I sorted the books and gave two bags to my kids’ teachers for their classroom library. A bag of picture books went to a local early intervention literacy non-profit nearby. My caveat: it takes me a long time to get these organizational projects done so I did this a few weeks before February 14th.

How are you celebrating International Book Giving Day? Did you celebrate it early on your own like me?

Ann of Doodles and Jots is giving away a FREE adorable eBook she created in honor of International Book Giving Day: Doodles and Jots for Tots. It’s perfect for toddlers or preschoolers learning to read because her books are one word per page rhyming “board books”.

Time 4 Sleep has a wonderful FREE illustrated version of the classic story Jack and the Beanstalk aimed at children aged between 5 and 8. This animated tale brings an old classic to life.

Mom and Kiddo from What Do We Do All Day had a great idea for International Book Giving Day:

One thing I’ve started doing is when authors ask me to review a book on the website I suggest donating the book for Book Giving Day instead of sending me a free copy.

And because today is also Valentine’s Day, I’m sharing some Valentine images created by my eldest, Grasshopper and Sensei, who is now 13-years-old and clearly spending a lot of  time on Instagram! She invites you to use her images to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

My husband sent me this video for Valentine’s Day: The band Train surprises a solider and his girlfriend as he proposes with their song “Marry Me.”

Happy Valentine’s Day AND International Book Giving Day! Also Heart Smart and Black History Month! Hope you feel the love! A special THANK YOU to anyone who donated a book!

  1. Very cool Instagram pics, G-hopper! I still like the idea of stealthy book-leaving. I think I might throw a couple of new books down my library’s book return shoot.

I’m giving away 2 copies of my book “The Happy Mommy Handbook” and my friend is selecting someone’s favorite book giving organization to send $25.00. It’s in my latest post. Have a great book sharing day, Mia! Love your ideas.

  6. Yes, thanks for the reminder about International Book Giving Day. Just bought three more the other day. Doing mine in secret as well. Make sure to give more love than you get today and you will be rewarded. Happy Valentine’s Day!

  7. Thank you for your posts about this. We learned about this event through your posts on Google+ and we have been thrilled to participate this year. Thank you for getting the word out. We even surprised our UPS driver yesterday by handing him one of our books to take home to his kids!

You are so right! And my daughter thanks you for your kind compliment! Thank you for all the work you did to make sure the word was out about International Book Giving Day. I truly think it made a huge difference. I didn’t really hear much about it last year but I feel like the word was out this year. And can’t wait for next year to spread the joy!

  9. I’m a little bit late but Happy Book Giving Day. I didn’t get around to doing a post, but we also donated some of our books that were in good condition to a local organization.

    • Hi Mom and Kiddo,
How wonderful! It takes time to sort books and donate them so kudos to you for participating! I didn’t donate on the actual day but a few weeks before. Good thing because my car was in the shop all day so I wouldn’t have been able to. I think that is ok though, right?!
