Best Klutz Books for Girls Honorable Mentions
This is not a Klutz book, but it would appeal to girls (and boys) who like Klutz books…
Paint by Sticker Kids: Zoo Animals
This activity book is perfect for road trips or non-screen entertainment.
Safety Pin Bracelets
My girls who are in 3rd and 5th grade love beading and usually this costs me $60 at the bead store and results in only two necklaces. This kit is keeping them busy for days and makes a whole lot of bracelets. It also would make a nice birthday gift. $19.99 with 12 bracelet designs.
Sticker Design Studio
My girls have still not outgrown stickers and this kit is wonderful because it lets you color in black and white sticker designs that then peel off. The markers are included so it’s very portable and makes for great entertainment at restaurants or other places that have long waits. It also has a nice age range; pretty much any kid who can use a skinny marker would enjoy this kit. 400 stickers included. My kids actually fought over this one. The middle one who is 8 won out somehow (she’s small but scrappy) and because she still has to share, this is the ONLY item she has requested for her birthday next week. I’d say that is a pretty good testimonial for this product! Plus she’s been carrying it around from room to room and to restaurants.
Chalk the Block
This is a fun book that my kids tore open and attacked but the chalk lasted one session among 4 kids who were a little like caged beasts unleashed, this being the first day in a long winter that finally felt like spring! This is what it’s great for 1) your kids need ideas for sidewalk chalk, 2) big playdate/birthday party/kid book club activity, 3) you have or will purchase a giant bucket of sidewalk chalk and this book will give them fresh ideas, 4) birthday present idea. This would be a present I’d be excited for my kids to receive because it’s creative, keeps them outside, and doesn’t take up a lot of space. I really need to get that big bucket of chalk!
I just found this great post on Imagination Soup on Hopscotch Math. Here’s another reason to break out the sidewalk chalk!

My 11 year old loves playing hopscotch! In fact, we’ve run out of chalk due to the number of times she’s played it in the past few months. During the long hot summer, she found an alternative way of playing this delightful traditional game.
Step 1 – Draw a large 5 by 5 grid on the ground using chalk.
Step 2 – Fill the squares with the numbers 1 t0 25 randomly.
Step 3 – Gather any children aged 3 – 9 and get hopping!
Try the following hopping games to reinforce and practise arithmetic skills:
- Number Sequencing – Hop on each number in order from 1 through to 5, then 1 through to 10 then 1 through to 15, then 20 and then 25.
- Odd/Even Numbers – Hop on the odd or even numbers in order.
- Pre-subtraction – Hop on each number from 5 through to 1, then 10 through to 1, then 15, 20 and 25 through to 1.
- Addition – Start at 1 then add 2 each time, then 3, 4 etc. Repeat starting at 2, then 3 etc.
- Subtraction – Start at 10 then subtract 2 each time, then 3, then 4. Repeat starting at 15, 20 and 25.
- Times Tables – Hop through the 2, 3, 4 and 5 times tables.
The Marvelous Book of Magical Horses
This sweet book is a paper doll version for horses of the Pegasus variety but the colorful accessories (rainbow manes, saddles, tails, bows, etc.) stick better than with paper dolls because there is special sticky-but-not-permanent-adhesive magic at work. My girls are too old for this but any little girl who loves fairies, princesses, and unicorns would delight in this.

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
My 5 year old LOVED the Window Art so much we had to buy more paint. I haven’t see the magical horses – that looks fun!
To Melissa,
My kids loved that Window Art too! It’s fun and they love to stick on the windows which works better in the summer than winter.
