Kids Caught in the Act … Of READING!

Kids and Reading: How to Make It Fun

This is from Jill of MomsGoneGlobal.com:  “I will send you a recent photo I took of my six-year-old reading Magic Treehouse: Haunted Castle on Hallows Eve. He had just returned home from school wearing a cute Halloween hat which he had crafted in art class. When he saw that I had purchased the book for him, he grabbed it and dove onto the couch to devour it. He looked so cute in his hat, that I had to sneak a photo of him. To my surprise, the click of the camera did not disturb him. It must have been an excellent read because he stayed there and finished the entire book within the hour.”

Nice job Jill!  I think your timing of a Halloween themed book before Halloween was part of the allure.  I never seem to pull the timing of the themed books off!  Good for you!

This is my Mom Work Friend Kathleen’s son, Kevin.  She says:  “Kevin is at the Muir Woods National Redwood Park, north of San Francisco. Kevin wasn’t keeping up with us and I caught him reading each information plaque along the path. Love him!”

Thank you Kathleen!  Her son is naturally gravitating towards non-fiction and history.  I think that it’s great that you truly support his reading interests.

A reader, Bess, sent in this picture:  “Here is a picture of my DD, Eve, “reading” a book (around 22 months old). ”

Clearly her baby doll is enjoying it very much and Bess must be modeling reading so much so that her toddler is modeling it right back!  Thank you Bess!

A reader, Alicia, sent in this cute photo:  “My son Danny is only 6 months old, but it’s never too soon to start, right?  I feel that reading is so important that one of the first things in his nursery was a bookshelf full of books.”

Amen to that!  Thank you Alicia!

GlobeTrottingMama catches her son reading big, fat classics constantly ever since he started reading on the KOBO (an eReader) because, that this is the big because, he can adjust the font size!!!!  Read her post on Who’s Afraid of a Big, Thick Book?  My Guy.  Rethinking KOBO. Thank you GlobeTrottingMama!

My good friend, Professional Editor, is the “Fairy” God-Grandmother to Lyonel, age 3, who shares her love of reading!  May we all be so lucky to have a neighbor like Professional Editor!

  2. I love the idea and love the pics! It’s awesome to see kids reading!

  3. Thanks again for including us in this great post. My younger son has decided he wants to “make books.” For the past several days he’s been stapling together sheets of paper and then drawing different creatures on each page. We then sit down together and write a story to go with his drawings. If you’re interested, I’ll send you a photo of him “in the act” of created his own books.
    : )

  4. Great idea and great post! I like to leave books all over the place – not because I am messy like that but to encourage reading – well, that’s my story and I’m sticking with it!
