Highlights Hidden Pictures App for ages 4-8

Find the Hidden Pictures Game App

I remember as a kid how much I liked finding the hidden pictures in the Highlights magazines.  I didn’t have a subscription to the magazine, but read it at the dentist or doctor’s office.  In fact, this magazine reminds me of waiting in an office; just seeing the familiar logo actually conjures up the weird smell — a little medicine-y and a little stale — that those medical offices tend to have.

Luckily, now your children can have the pleasure of finding the hidden picture without a dreaded trip to the doctor or dentist!  I really like this app.  It was actually a little challenging for ME to find all the pictures.  Note that you have to scroll the picture down (even on an iPad) to see the full puzzle in order to complete the game.

I don’t have the research on hand, but I remember reading that puzzles of the jig saw variety help with literacy because identifying shapes that fit together is a lot like figuring out shapes of letters and shapes of words. That makes sense to me.   I’ll take a leap and propose that finding hidden pictures in a picture is also along that vein — seeing and noticing details helps with learning to read.

This app is $1.99 at iTunes.  To check it out, just click on the top icon.  Here’s a screen shot of the app.  The app comes with a puzzle and I received two more free by giving them my info.  Additional puzzles can be purchased separately.

If your child likes to find hidden pictures, he or she might also like this counting book, Pigs from 1 to 10 by Arthur Geisert, where you find the number hidden in the picture.
