eBook Asian American Shape Book for Kids
Round is a Mooncake written by Roseanne Thong and illustrated by Grace Lin, is an ebook for the iPhone or iPad about shapes with an Asian American Children’s Literature twist. The eBook is great for new readers because the words light up as the narrator (a charming young girl’s voice) reads the story. I have to say that I think the lighting up of words as a story is read is one of the greatest attributes of an eBook over a traditional book.
There is a small interactive twist of hidden sounds (the cat meows), but it’s not on every page, which might be confusing for young readers. I also wish that the shapes in the pictures that correspond to the text would light up but they don’t. This might have been a better application of the technology of eBooks versus the hidden sounds. It is a book about shapes, after all!
All in all, though, this is a lovely ebook. I love Grace Lin’s illustrations and narration. The Asian American themed shapes is a welcome addition to Asian American Children’s Literature. This eBook is perfect for ages 2-6.
Thumbs up!
